Coaching the Lost Pet’s Family

Our most valuable tool is a dedicated family open to learning!

Many of the techniques that WORK to bring a lost scared animal home are not intuitive. We work with the family to learn these techniques so that they can have the happiest resolution. Lost Animal Resource Group can’t do this work alone–we need the family to work alongside of us! This is especially important in the case of a pet lost in a geographic area not local to LARG.

Lost Pet Humane Trapping

For Lost Pet Humane Trapping, we use specialized, safe and humane traps that don’t injure the animal. We also use technology like special cellular based cameras to observe  the animal’s behavior in and around the trap so we can modify our strategy if needed. We have special training, skills, experience and knowledge of these pets and their behavior patterns.

When we have a consistent location for a lost pet, we set up the special cameras and feeding stations with food and water to attract the lost pet to the area. Once we have those consistent sightings, we can set a trap that many times captures the lost animal within hours or days. For harder to catch animals, or animals that have been trapped before, we have special traps that usually are able to safely capture the pet.

When an animal gets out, many times they go into survival mode and aren’t thinking straight and need special approaches or trapping. We help coach you on what to do, what not to do, such as putting out as many lost pet posters as possible as soon as possible.

Pet Foster and Adoption

When we are called upon to safely trap/capture a roaming animal, we assume that there is an owner missing their pet! In the best case, the pet we trap has an ID or an updated microchip, resulting in a happy reunion! If no owner is found, we work with several local (Mid-Atlantic) rescue groups and shelters to board, train and help find new loving families for these pets. These organizations have the training and expertise to help find those forever homes.

LARG is also available to help with educating new fosters/adopters on how to keep new and current pets safe. It isn’t uncommon for a newly acquired pet to escape! These animals are in an unfamiliar situation and location; they need to have some down time and be kept safe with a collar and harness and 2 leashes when walking. Better safe than sorry!
